History

1894 The first Iwataro opens Oka Bokkodo – the Scroll Mounter.
Around this time, the studio received patronage from Tomioka Tessai and Imao Keinen, thus studio workers were mainly engaged in mounting new works of such artists.
1919 Moved to the current location.
1923 The company building is rebuilt (current structure).
1935 Succession of the professional name Iwataro to the second generation
1947 Paintings in the collection of the Enman-in Temple are restored after WWII, and the conservation of cultural properties becomes the main focus.
1961 Attendance at the IIC 10th Anniversary International Conference in Rome.  Many museums and conservation laboratories were visited during this trip, beginning a deep exchange with foreign countries.
1976 Second generation Iwataro is awarded a Purple Ribbon.
1977 The company is incorporated into Oka Bokkodo Co., Ltd.
1980 The Kyoto National Museum establishes the Conservation Center for Cultural Properties, and studio space is provided in the building.
1983 Second generation Iwataro is awarded the Fourth Class of the Order of the Sacred Treasure, and receives the 1st Kyoto Prefectural Preservation of Cultural Heritage Fund Contribution Award.
Succession of the professional name Iwataro to the third generation. 90th Anniversary of the company, “Oka Bokkodo 90 years of Progress” is published.
1995 With the 100th anniversary of the company’s founding, “Restoration”, a periodical, which announces company’s achievements and initiatives, is issued.
2002 Third generation Iwataro receives an award from the Commissioner of the Agency of Cultural Affairs
2006 Website is created to share information about the current activities of Oka Bokkodo Co., Ltd.
2007 Yasuhiro Oka assumes Director position.
2008 Third generation Iwataro is awarded the conference award for the 2nd Conference on the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Properties.
2012 Third generation Iwataro is awarded the Order of the Rising Sun.
2014 Succession of the professional name Iwataro to the fourth generation.
In celebration of the 120th year of the company, “Restoration” No. 9 and 10 is published.
