Business Summary
Oka Bokkodo Co., Ltd. utilizes traditional scroll mounting techniques, cultivated in Kyoto, with contemporary conservation technology, mainly focusing on the treatment and display of paintings and important writings. We are not limited to the conservation of designated cultural assets, such as National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, but will treat and mount all collected treasures.
Full Conservation Treatment of Damaged Paintings and Writings
We will dismantle the binding or mount and improve damage. In addition to consolidating paints or inks, and replacing lining papers, upon consultation with the owner, we can remount the work with new mounting silks and roller knobs, finishing it in the optimal condition for exhibition, appreciate and preservation. Anticipating the future of the work, we focus on safe conservation treatment.
Emergency Repairs to Partial Damages
We can respond to emergency repairs needed for works displayed at Buddhist services or on loan to exhibitions. If the damage is minor, we are able to travel to the requested location to do the work. In such cases, we will take the best measures not to hinder future, overall treatment.
Collection Survey and Condition Assessment
To make an accurate judgment assessing the necessity and urgency of conservation treatment, paintings can be examined on site. Often, it is not possible to make a diagnosis by assessment of obvious damage alone, such as tearing or creasing, and in this case, we can consult one of our specialized conservators for assessment and accurate diagnosis. If multiple works are assessed, we can propose the order of conservation priority.
Mounting of New Works
We will mount newly created works. We can propose an appropriate format such as hanging scroll, folding screens, sliding doors, hand scrolls, bound text, or frame, to further enhance the work.
Study of Materials and Techniques for Mounting and Conservation
We are trying to develop better materials and techniques based on the latest scientific information about traditionally used materials and techniques. Also, we conduct various scientific analyses on the advanced techniques of our skilled conservators to collect research that can be used toward the succession of skills.
